How it plays

Demons guard the Black Gate, between three and seven of them (2K3+1) standing in front of the Nameless One. They can't be negotiated with or bribed, and with resistance 4 two spells in three fail against them, so fight with weapons. Agility 5 means every attack wounds, but each is only 1K6+2 strong. Work through them quickly: the Gate's explosions keep hitting you every round.

  • It resists a spell on a 1K6 roll of 1–4, so about 67% of your spells fail against it.
  • Its attacks wound 100% of the time and average 1.0 wounds per attack at maze level 1.
  • It cannot be negotiated with or bribed: the only way past is a fight.
  • It never lairs or wanders: it only guards the Black Gate (rule 16.0).

Figures are for maze level 1 and come straight from the rulebook tables. Deeper levels add strength, agility and reluctance to negotiate (table 6.7).
