Citadel of Blood

Death Maze

A solo dungeon crawl: lead a party into the maze, then find and destroy the Hellgate. A browser adaptation of the Citadel of Blood board game and its Polish edition, Labirynt Śmierci, faithful to the original rulebooks. Deathmaze, their ancestor, is playable too.

Faithful rules

The game engine follows the original rulebook step by step.

Three rulebooks to play by

Citadel of Blood, SPI's 1980 game, is the default. You can also play Labirynt Śmierci, the Polish game made from it, and Deathmaze (the Basic and the Advanced game), the 1979 game they both grew out of. The Heroes and most tables of the first two are the same; the names and about two dozen rules are not. Deathmaze has its own, smaller rulebook.

How a delve plays out

Three steps, repeated until the Gate falls, or your party does.

  1. 1 Draw and explore

Pull maze tiles from the pool to reveal it room by room, corridor by corridor.

  2. 2 Fight and search

Battle, talk or bribe your way past whatever guards each room, then search for gold, valuables and magic items.

  3. 3 Find the Hellgate

Track the Gate down in the depths, fight through the Demons and X the Unknown who guard it, and destroy it before your party falls.

What is Death Maze?

Death Maze is a browser version of Citadel of Blood, the 1980 SPI board game, and of Labirynt Śmierci, its unlicensed Polish edition from Encore. You play solo and lead the whole party yourself (the board game seats one to six), building the maze tile by tile under the printed rules, with optional house rules and mods. Citadel of Blood is the default; pick a ruleset when you start an adventure. Deathmaze, the 1979 SPI game both grew out of, is playable here too, in both its Basic and its Advanced game: read the history.
