Magic items

Magic weapons

Magic weapons add a bonus to every attack roll made with them: +1, +2 or +3, or two rolls added together, which comes to about 2.75 on average. A character can carry only two kinds of weapon, so taking one means dropping another. The table rewards hammers and axes at high totals, but the bonus matters more than the type.

Average wounds per attack, by weapon, when the agility, proficiency and bonus add up to +4, +6 or +8 on the roll
Weapon +4 +6 +8
Dagger 1 1.3 1.8
Knife 0.8 1.2 1.5
Bow 1 1.3 1.8
Sword 1.2 1.5 2.2
Hammer 1.2 1.7 2.5
Axe 1.2 1.5 2.3

Magic sword

Found in 1 of every 36 magic items.

A magic sword goes in the sword column and can be used from the front rank. Give it to a character with sword proficiency so the bonus stacks on top.

  • Its bonus is added to every attack roll made with it, and a character can carry only two kinds of weapon, so taking it means dropping one (rule 14.3).

Magic hammer

Found in 1 of every 36 magic items.

A magic hammer hits hardest at mid-to-high totals: it reaches 3 wounds at a modified roll of 12, where a sword needs 13. It is a front-rank weapon, so give it to a strong front-rank character.

  • Its bonus is added to every attack roll made with it, and a character can carry only two kinds of weapon, so taking it means dropping one (rule 14.3).

Magic axe

Found in 1 of every 36 magic items.

A magic axe matches the hammer at the top of the table (4 wounds at 14, 5 at 16) and beats the sword there. It is a front-rank weapon, and a natural choice for a dwarf, since dwarves often have axe proficiency.

  • Its bonus is added to every attack roll made with it, and a character can carry only two kinds of weapon, so taking it means dropping one (rule 14.3).

Magic bow

Found in 1 of every 36 magic items.

A magic bow can only be fired from the second rank, where its bonus makes an archer hit far more reliably. Remember a character can't shoot and cast in the same round.

  • Its bonus is added to every attack roll made with it, and a character can carry only two kinds of weapon, so taking it means dropping one (rule 14.3).

Magic dagger

Found in 1 of every 36 magic items.

A magic dagger is a light hitter, but it is a front-rank weapon, and the bonus matters most on weak columns: it lifts the dagger from nothing at a total of 4 to a wound at 5. Good for a character with no better melee option.

  • Its bonus is added to every attack roll made with it, and a character can carry only two kinds of weapon, so taking it means dropping one (rule 14.3).

Magic knife

Found in 1 of every 36 magic items.

A magic knife can only be thrown once per fight, from the second rank, so even a big bonus buys a single throw. Treat it as a spare, not a main weapon.

  • Its bonus is added to every attack roll made with it, and a character can carry only two kinds of weapon, so taking it means dropping one (rule 14.3).

In Citadel of Blood

Known in Citadel of Blood as throwing dagger.
